with my pregnancy progressing into the few last weeks, i am feeling bigger by the day, hence my painting energy seems to dwindle a little… however i am still pushing as my upcoming show july29-august 1st, 2009 at the fairmont algonquin is coming fast… so far, i have held up my endeavor to paint every day… here a little update of my finished ones;-)

for my upcoming ‘Fundy Artists’ show at the Fairmont Algonquin, july29-august 1st, 2009 my goal is to get painting every day now (if possible)… it makes a difference if i am commited that way, as the ’seeing brain’ (as my former teacher Chinkok Tan calls it) just clicks in faster and the works just seem to flow smoother. of course with two little children and one on the way, the time doesn’t always allow for long sessions, but a few minutes every day help me a lot to focus- kind of like a meditation. so here i am posting a couple that i just put the finishing touches on…
green lobster boat 5×6in, 12×15cm, 68$ (the red lobster boat you can view here)

cherry martini, 9×7in, 22×17cm, 125.-

on a different note: if you are an artist and looking for some art or painting classes on the east coast in the maritimes, St. Andrews is a great spot to come: with approx. 2000 inhabitants still cosy and personal, but with all amenities like bigger cities near by: from inexpensive or 5 star lodging, dining, unique shops and outdoor adventures, museums, galleries,…. Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Center offers a wide range of courses for all levels and ages, both art and craft and nature. Chinkok Tan, teacher at the Ontario College of Art and Design offeres summer art courses in watercolour, acrylic and oil, and sometimes well known painters stop by like last year with the ‘En Plein air masters’ workshops did we have Kevin Macpherson, Joe Anna Arnett, James Asher, John Burton, Betty Carr, Kenn Backhaus to name a few ’stop by’ to teach for a couple of weeks in our wonderful setting.
it also offeres a great platform for further exploration of the east coast up Nova Scotia/ PEI/ NB or down Maine… if you haven’t made a stop here in St. Andrews, we’d love to see you, maybe even welcome you as one of our guests at our own Europa Inn and Restaurant right downtown.

after all the rain we had the last weeks, i thought it might be nice for my children to have a picknick and paint-out on the beach. we went to the boat landing as it is close to home, but quiet and full of interesting treasures for the kids to collect at low tide. and a great time we had… see the results from Sabrina and Simone (Maximilian, 2 had fun scrubbing so much water onto his paper until it was disolved and Mama’s watercolour bush killed- so no post from his side this time;-)
Sabrina’s beach, aquarell

Red Lobster Boat, 5×6in watercolour, 13×15cm, aquarell, 68.-$

living here in Canada, the first of july is always a celebration. And even that the weather was not ideal here in the maritimes, there were tons of people in St. Andrews. I like the happy mood of the Canadian Holiday versus the German ‘Tag der Deutschen Einheit’ where you feel reminded of a bitter past.
Yesterday the weather was so gorgeous, i headed out to paint the lupins- before the blooms are gone for anther year…
Lupin breeze: 7×5.5in watercolour, 17.5×14cm aquarell, $68.- ea

as the weather just was too beautiful to ‘do housework’ i took my painting chair and headed out to do more Lupins- this time watercolour. Lupina-bonanza; watercolour, 11×7

an hour ago, i was on the phone with a friend and i mentioned not to post any more painting photos until my show opening- she adviced me to DO post more, hence here some painting updates;-) the lupins from glebe road: at the beginning of glebe road, where later in the season the wild roses bloom… i just love the spot! there’s this old apple tree clinging on to the soil, almost eroded into the sea. it was a wonderful day- full of god’s creation- bees and butterflies, wildflowers and warm rays of sunshine- what a blessing for the soul!

Glebe Road Lupins- 18×24in, 45×61cm Gallery wrapped canvas
Kingsbrae Lupins 30×24in, 75×60cm, Acrylic on Canvas- sorry for the bad quality pics, took it at 9pm after the phone call;-)

this weeks challenge from the ‘different strokes from different folks’ is painting a veggie medley from one posted photo. Hier meine Interpretation. Ich habe dafuer mein letztes Blatt ‘yupo‘ papier genommen, und hatte viel Spass dabei. 45×60cm.

here’s my take on it. i used my very last sheet of ‘yupo‘ paper, and it was great fun doing it;-) 18×24in
i am handing out invitations to my art show left and right, i am getting nervous already- hopefully i won’t be all by myself at the opening!!!! it seems to be my nightmare, ha,ha.
i am still painting at high speed in those last days before the show… it is a good feeling, never the less and i am learning soo much just through the process of organizing it and seeing it take on shape- thank you Lord for it.
my last acrylic, Fish Market again, with the work-in-progress WIP stages… 24×30 in. 60×75cm

Basic Bock-in with a tertiary mix of hansa yellow light, Red Rose Deep and Phthalo blue (all Da Vinci) Erstes Einzeichnen der Grundform mit einem Farbmix aus den Primaerfarben gelb, blau, rot (DA Vinci)

Basic establishing of form and Colour (worked from Photo on Computer Screen) Grundform und -farbe sind ethabliert (habe das Foto auf dem Computer Screen als Vorlage)

Next day ‘on location’- to get the finishing touches and catch the ‘mood’-(using Golden Open acrylics- so i don’t battle the drying times) important to go there at the same time when the reference photo was taken- even 2 hours make a big difference in how the shadows fall…oh, yes, a little visitor came by: a ground hog- first he drank from the big water puddle and then went over to the fish market to snack on some dandy lion seeds!

the weather was so perfect, i just had to head out to the fish market again- this time to finish the big canvas i painted exclusively from the plein air sketch i did a few days back. here’s a pic of my set up this time: good old french easel- worked great- i am still trying to find the ‘perfect’ set up- the never ending search, haha. This painting will go in my solo show in july.

My french easel with 24x39 canvas- meine tragbare Staffelei mit 60x76cm Leinwand

here the finished painting- fish market, 24x30 in, hier das fertige Bild - alter Fischmarkt, 60x76 cm

with the sunny and warm weather we have now, i had to head out to my favourite painting spot: yeah, you guessed it: the fish market.
i will be so sad once the old shaggy house gets torn down this fall.
fish market, 8×10, open acylic on canvas panel
because i have a more commissions ordered from this scene i gladly took off yesterday after the kids went to daycare to try out some new gear:
the new ‘golden open acrylics‘ and the ‘easy L’ MacPherson pochade easel. oh, and it all was just perfect! no wind, mid morning sun giving great sun/shade definition on the house (which really helps in creating a high contrast painting), and after the initial wrestling with the new equiment all stood up and worked well. here’s a pic of the set up…

about the paints i have to say: the way slower drying time make them ideal for outdoor painting without the need of retarders or other slowing medium. just open the tube and get started. the feel is almost like oils, without the turps and fumes- great for me as i am pregnant. they feel a tad gooey though- nothing major.
the easel is a simple tripod set up, and i hung the water container from the side knob. as the pochade does not feature a carrying spot for the wet painting, i used corrugated plastic canvas- carrier.
as for colour palette i used: hansa yellow light, cad. red light, alizarin crimson hue, ultramarine blue and titanium yellow. now, i found that it was a bit of a change from my primary palette i usually use, as i had a hard time to mix pure greens with the ultramarine. also, with the cad. red and alizarin crimson hue i had a limited use of reds. never the less i am very happy with the results- and i had a great time painting. thank you Lord, for this day!
harbour boats, acrylic on canvas, 28×48
this is the harbour painting i finished. it’s quite big for me at 28×48in- acrylic on canvas. took a long time to finish, but i learned a lot through the process. i used my Da Vinci paints for it: hansa yellow light, red rose deep, phthalo blue and titanium white.
i feel so blessed beeing able to enjoy the great outdoors and its wonderful creation… once home, i am always very humbled- by its beauty and magnificant creator.

todays post is two paintings I did for Karin Jurick’s blog:
different strokes from different folks-DSFDF how we lovingly call it…the challenge she posted was a photo from madison avenue.
after doing a charcoal sketch to lay out the big dark/light pattern shapes I did a watercolour sketch which is the first photo here,
afterwards I took out my soft pastels and that new Sabretooth pastel paper I got in green and went at it. I wanted to focus on the high buildings, hence the portrait format.
